Rail transport prevents 66 km of road congestion daily

With its new rail project AIS II (Antwerp Intermodal Solutions), Antwerp Port Authority aims to take more containers off the road. There is now potential for 340,000 container-loads of new or existing freight to be carried to or from the Antwerp port area by rail. At the moment, 200 container shuttles per week travel to and from 40 destinations in 13 countries. Every day these shuttle trains keep 4,000 trucks off the road and prevent 66 km of traffic jams. Over the space of a year they prevent 200,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions.  » more

2010, an exciting cruise year!

The brand-new ship, Aida Blu, of German cruise line, Aida Cruises will be the first ship to call at Antwerp during the new cruise season. It will call at Antwerp weekly from 10 March onwards, with 2,500 passengers on board, which is a new record for the city.  » more

Deepening of Western Scheldt to be done much sooner

Hilde Crevits, Flemish minister of Mobility & Public Works, has announced that the work of deepening the navigation channel in the Western Scheldt will be completed much sooner than originally planned. The work was originally scheduled to take two years, but this has now been reduced to one year at the most. “There is a formal undertaking on the part of Flanders, the Netherlands and the dredging company to finish the work within one year at the latest, hopefully even before the end of this year,” minister Crevits declared.  » more

Port community aims to keep and attract trade

The Antwerp port community will make additional efforts to attract new, conventional trade to the port. For this purpose a series of five covenants was signed on Tuesday, 2 February in Antwerp Town Hall by the Port Authority, Alfaport Antwerpen and five trade associations.  » more
