Liquid Bulk

With 1,474 tanks offering and a total of more than 3.6 million m³ of storage capacity, Antwerp has an excellent position for liquid bulk and is an important European player in this sector. The capacity of stainless steel tanks is 164,147 m³, making Antwerp the world market leader for this type of sophisticated storage capability.

The tank storage providers in Antwerp share a dedication to quality and flexibility, combined with healthy competition, making Antwerp a cost-effective distribution centre.

The emphasis in Antwerp lies on distribution of chemicals, for which the port occupies a leading position in Europe. Large quantities of crude oil are brought to the refineries in the Antwerp port area by a direct pipeline connection with Rotterdam. The underground network of 300 km of pipelines in the port area guarantees cost-effective, efficient and safe transport of liquids. In 2009 the port of Antwerp handled more than 39,5 million tonnes of liquid bulk.

The specialised tank storage companies offer a comprehensive range of tank facilities for liquid bulk, with capacities ranging from 30 to 50,000 m³. The terminals handle all types of liquid bulk and gas, using specialised equipment such as carbon fibre tanks for storage of chemicals and petroleum derivatives, stainless steel tanks for sensitive substances, heated or cooled tanks, coated tanks, spherical tanks for gases under pressure, stainless steel reactors, fully automated storage for oil drums and IBC (intermediate bulk container).

When it comes to dangerous goods too, Antwerp offers specialised storage facilities that meet the strictest national and European standards for fire safety and firefighting, industrial safety and protection of the environment. The ventilated storage compartments are separated by fireproof partitions, there are foam and sprinkler systems throughout, and all equipment is explosion-proof. All floors are impermeable.

In order to prevent soil contamination, the warehouses are built to retain a sufficient quantity of liquids, so that spilled substances and extinguishing water are prevented from entering the environment in the event of a fire.

There are six companies in the Antwerp port area specialising in storage, handling and repackaging of plastic granulates. Bagged plastics are stored on pallets or in the many warehouses in and around the port, together offering a storage capacity of 300,000 m³ for granulates.

The port of Antwerp is actually the largest petrochemical cluster in Europe: no fewer than ten of the world’s top 20 chemical producers have chosen Antwerp as one of their strategic locations.

The port of Antwerp offers a stable, local base for ethylene and other basic chemicals, as well as a surprising variety of other chemicals.

The port is also the main intersection of the western European pipelines. This mode of transport ensures safe, reliable supply and distribution of their products for the chemical companies in Antwerp.
