Road transport

Road transport plays a crucial role in connections between the port of Antwerp and its hinterland. Within the port area itself, thousands of trucks come and go every day between the terminals, warehouses and industrial companies, ensuring efficient transport of all types of goods.

Antwerp is very centrally located within the European network: all the neighbouring countries can be reached quickly and easily by road from the port, as can the industrial region of Wallonia and the ports of Ghent and Zeebrugge.

Within the port area the Liefkenshoek and Kennedy tunnels form the connections between the left and right banks of the Scheldt.

There are numerous road haulage companies in and around Antwerp, offering a whole range of efficient, advanced services. This concentration of service providers and the high degree of flexibility ensure that an appropriate response can always be found to every transport requirement, even the most specialised and unique.

The road haulage companies are continually adapting to new demands and requirements. For instance, there are highly specialised companies that concentrate on transport of dangerous goods (ADR) or outsize loads.

Many of the companies offer not only transport services but also related logistics activities, including storage of goods under controlled conditions, modifying goods to suit the local market (localisation), or integrated, door-to-door logistics. In many cases they also take care of customs clearance and other formalities.

During the past few years there have been large investments aimed at securing Antwerp’s central place in the European road network. The ringroad round Antwerp was fully modernised in 2004-2005 and now meets the very latest standards for traffic control and safety.

The Master Plan includes construction of an additional road that will form a connection between the left and right banks of the Scheldt, between city and port. This road, the Oosterweel link, will close the last gap in the Antwerp ringroad.
