Social

The port of Antwerp is a place where people meet and come together. The Kerkship organisation and the seamen’s churches play an important role here. As the parish church and church hall, the Kerkship is a religious and social anchorage for the seafaring community. On working days, however, it is first and foremost a refuge for all those who work within the port or who find themselves there for any reason: port personnel, dockers, drivers, office employees, seamen, bargees ... in short a complete cross-section of all those whose business takes them to the port. The Kerkship is a landmark and beacon in the port of Antwerp, where everyone is always welcome.

In addition to the Kerkship there are three other seamen’s churches in Antwerp: one Norwegian, one Swedish and one Finnish. These national seafarers’ houses mainly concern themselves with seamen from their own country. Their presence reflects the international character of the port and city of Antwerp. Other international port visitors are always welcome at the Antwerp Seafarers’ Centre.
