Antwerp Port Authority
Board of directors The board of directors determines the strategic options for the port, lays down long-term policy guidelines and exercises democratic control over port policy. The board is chaired by Antwerp’s Alderman for the Port, Marc Van Peel, and further consists of ten Antwerp city councillors and a number of co-opted experts.

Regional Port Commissioner The Regional Port Commissioner, Toon Colpaert, exercises control over Antwerp Port Authorities and the port authorities of Ghent, Ostend and Zeebrugge, under the terms of the Flemish Ports Decree. The Commissioner can among other things block decisions by the governing bodies that he considers to be in conflict with this decree. Harbourmaster's Office The Harbourmaster’s office is headed by the Harbourmaster and is responsible for the safe, smooth flow of shipping traffic to, from and in the port. It assigns berths and ensures safety within the port area. For this purpose the harbourmaster officials have a number of police powers. They also monitor the transport of dangerous goods, and deal with accidents causing damage to port infrastructure or polluting the docks. Marketing, Promotion & Commercial Relations The Marketing, Promotion & Commercial Relations department organises promotion activities in Belgium and abroad, aimed at making the port better known among shippers, shipping companies, logistics operators and industrial players on the one hand and the general public on the other. This is done by means of Port Days, exhibitions and guided tours of the port, among other things. The department also acts as the point of contact for all parties involved with port activities in commercial terms. It manages commercial projects, provides advice and support to future customers of the port, and acting in close collaboration with the port community it helps to attract new trade to the port. Government contracts All contracts made by Antwerp Port Authority are allocated in response to tenders based on contract specifications. Property management The Port Authority awards concessions for sites, warehouses and covered storage within the port area, for private companies in which to carry out their businesses. Documentation Centre The centre for documentation on port economics and transport is located in the Port Authority headquarters. It may be consulted by appointment. Planning Permission desk The Planning Permission desk handles applications for planning permission within the geographical port area on the right bank of the Scheldt. The applications are passed on to the College of Mayor and Aldermen, after consultation with and approval from the city planning official. The actual planning permission is granted by the College. Dredging department The Dredging department ensures sufficient keeldepth in the tidal berths and the non-tidal docks within the port area. It is responsible for carrying out and/or supervising maintenance dredging work, and for treatment and disposal of dredging spoil. This covers the port area down to the smallest detail, and offers a geographical view of many different aspects of port activity. The GIS can be consulted on the basis of surface area, docks, land use, green areas, type of terminal etc. Some of the information from the GIS is made available to external partners and users, e.g. for the Large Scale Basic Map and for the GPS quay numbering. Infrastructure services The infrastructure services are responsible for construction and/or supervision of infrastructure work within the port area, including roads, bridges, locks, docks, quay walls, jetties etc. More specifically these services concentrate on renovation and new construction, dry infrastructure (roads, wharves, own buildings, etc.), wet infrastructure (including the locks) and ecological infrastructure (see “The Port More Naturally”) (link). Part of their task is to give form to the Town & Country Planning and Strategic plan. The Floating Crane department manages and maintains the Brabo, which can lift up to 800 tonnes, together with the Portunus and Titan, each with a lifting capacity of 45 tonnes. Tug service Manoeuvring a seagoing ship within the dock complex is a critical task. Ships can be assisted with this by one or more of the Port Authority’s tugs. Collaborative associations
AMARIS Information & computer technology (ICT) is of strategic importance for the port. In the competitive world of shipping it is vital to ensure smooth flow of traffic within the port, as well as quick handling, efficient management of freight (including dangerous goods) and correct financial processing: these are all mission-critical aspects that require a high level of ICT support. AMARIS, the ICT subsidiary of Antwerp Port Authority, develops and implements special shipping applications and manages the Port Authority’s computer equipment. APEC-Antwerp/Flanders Port Training Center This training organisation organises short, practice-oriented, interactive seminars for people from other ports, enabling them to acquire the Antwerp know-how in modern port operations. One of the main features is collaboration between public and private port authorities. APEC-Antwerp/Flanders Port Training Center is affiliated with Antwerp Port Authority, and receives support from the Flemish Government and from Alfaport, in collaboration with the Province of Antwerp and Belgian Technical Cooperation.
