Container gateway

Antwerp is accessible to the largest container ships

There is smooth access to the port for the world's largest container ships. The port receives Ultra Large Container Ships (ULCS) from MSC, Maersk, Cosco and others every week. At the Deurganck Dock, Antwerp can serve container ships with a draught of up to 16 metres* upstream and 15.2 metres* downstream (*taking account of the tidal window).

Certified Pick up

Many parties are involved in handling containers at the port of Antwerp. In order increase safety, operational efficiency and transparency, Port of Antwerp is launching a digital application for the release of containers: Certified Pick up. From 2021, this central data platform will arrange the release of containers based on encrypted identification and authorisation details. This application will contribute to a safe, effective and resilient logistical chain.

Types of products

Toys, televisions, clothing, food and computers: containers are the best way of transporting these and many similar kinds of products. A 20-foot container can hold the contents of 300 shopping trolleys!

The containers' fixed size also has a major advantage. Owing to the standard dimensions, the containers can fit on seagoing vessels, trucks, inland navigation vessels and train carriages.

SOLAS Container weight verification requirement

The SOLAS regulations (Safety Of Life At Sea) require shippers and forwarders to provide the gross weight of export shipping containers. A shipping company can only load a container if it is provided with its VGM, Verified Gross Mass. Therefore, shippers and forwarders are responsible for supplying an accurate VGM for each container to the shipping companies in good time.
