Drone keeps watchful eye

Since mid-October, Port of Antwerp Port Authority Officers have been assisted by a drone from the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) to keep watch over operations. It will collect images during oil incidents as well as aerial images of regular operations. The images can be accessed remotely by emergency and security services as needed.

Port of Antwerp and EMSA concluded a collaboration agreement to deploy a drone to support the Port Authority Officers in their enforcement duties from October to December 2020. The drone pilot runs in parallel with Port Authority Officers during their duties, providing aerial views of the situation on the ground. "This new technology enables us to respond faster to incidents, creating a safer port for everyone," says Port of Antwerp Port Captain, Paul Wauters.

The images are not only useful to Port Authority Officers. During incidents, the drone quickly provides an overview of the situation. Its images can be accessed remotely by emergency and security services via a secure connection. The University of Antwerp will use any oil spill images to develop algorithms to automatically detect oil incidents.
