New direct rail link to four-country region

Tuesday 15 12 2020

Lineas Intermodal is further expanding the Green Xpress Network. From 15 December, three trains a week will connect Antwerp with the "four-country region" in Austria, Germany, Liechtenstein and Switzerland. These 4 important economic hubs provide even better access to the port of Antwerp.

Port of Antwerp noted last year that there was great demand from the market in Vorarlberg and Swabia for new connections. This resulted in discussions with various stakeholders such as shippers and forwarders in the hinterland regions, as well as with the rail operators.

23 trains throughout Europe

The new Lineas connection connects Antwerp with Wolfurt, Vorarlberg in Austria and with Langweid-Foret in the Swabia region of southern Germany. A stop in Recklinghausen enables a direct rail connection to the Ruhr area. With the new routes, Lineas now has 23 Green Xpress trains throughout Europe.

"The expansion of the rail offering to Vorarlberg and Swabia is due to a strong interest among our customers," says Olivier Deprez, Head of Network Management & Alliances. "In Swabia, a major freight forwarder is stepping up its train operations and opening up its tracks to external customers to move cargo by rail. In Vorarlberg, the cargo arrives by rail at the Combi Cargo Terminal Wolfurt, whereas previously this could only be done by road."

Rail transport for any type of cargo

Countless products can be transported by rail. These include: wood products, or consumer goods. Thanks to the expansion, both conventional and container cargo can be transported in railcars to and from various overseas destinations via the port of Antwerp.
