New top sports partnership

Monday 15 03 2021

Port of Antwerp has long played an active role as partner to sports clubs and international sports events. Until now, the focus has been on sports disciplines such as tennis, football, basketball and hockey. By choosing the Belgian golf pro Manon De Roey, Port of Antwerp is entering into a partnership with an individual top athlete for the first time.

Meet Manon De Roey

Manon De Roey, from Antwerp, started playing golf at the age of eleven and won the Belgian Youth Trophy at the age of sixteen. Since then, she has been a member of the Belgian National Golf Team and represented Belgium at several European Team Championships. In 2010, she graduated from the Top Sport School for Golf in Hasselt. Afterwards, she played college golf at the University of New Mexico (USA), where she studied psychology and management, for four years. She won several tournaments there. Since 2015, Manon De Roey has been a member of the Ladies European Tour and playing professionally. With a fourth place in the European rankings in 2020, Manon De Roey is the best performing Belgian golf athlete at the moment.

Why did Port of Antwerp choose golf?

Golf is known as the sport par excellence, where entrepreneurs meet. In the Antwerp port community too, golf is a popular sport with international networking opportunities. However, this is not the main reason for choosing to partner with Manon De Roey, explains Port of Antwerp CEO Jacques Vandermeiren: “Port of Antwerp is an advocate of greater diversity and gender equality in the port world. Entering into a partnership with a female athlete underscores that commitment. There is a need for greater gender equality in the sporting world too. In many sports, the pay gap between male and female athletes is still very large. With this partnership, we hope to pay more attention to talented young athletes and the challenges they face in their careers. As a golf enthusiast, I look up to Manon De Roey and what she has achieved at a sporting level. Port of Antwerp wants to give her every opportunity to further develop her potential as a top athlete. We're looking forward to seeing what accomplishments she has in store!”

Manon De Roey is also looking forward to the new collaboration with enthusiasm: “Just like the port of Antwerp, golf has many different dimensions. We share our sense of passion and human connection. With Port of Antwerp, I'm getting the confidence to develop myself as a top athlete. I'm looking forward to producing great results and contributing to the rising popularity of golf in Belgium.”

Visibility on different continents

The next tournaments in which Manon De Roey will participate are the South African's Womens Open and the Aramco Team Series in New York. After that, there are tournaments in France, Sweden, Finland, Czechia and The Netherlands on the agenda. Later this year, she will represent Belgium at the Olympic Games in Tokyo.

Port of Antwerp wishes Manon every success!
