Shortsea trade expanding

Thursday 19 10 2017

Antwerp is the market leader in the Mediterranean area. Now the port has further strengthened its position by offering two new shortsea services, as well as an alternative for the Maltese market where ACB is competing against truck transport. In the meantime two new services have been introduced in northern Europe.

Mediterranean

Seago Line, the shortsea subsidiary of Maersk Line, has included the port of Antwerp as a port of call with a weekly connection to Casablanca, under the name of Atlantic Sea Service. For this service Seago Line is operating two vessels with capacities of 700 and 800 TEU handled at the Europa terminal (PSA) in Antwerp.

In addition Cosco Shipping in collaboration with partners Yang Ming and Evergreen has introduced a new service via Antwerp to Casablanca, Piraeus, Alexandria (El Dekheila), Haifa and Mersin. Cosco Shipping as the instigator will supply three of the five vessels. The Taiwanese carrier Yang Ming for its part is offering the 4,253 TEU YM Busan, while Evergreen will also contribute a ship. Antwerp is the last port of lading in northern Europe, where the service will berth at quay 1700 in the Antwerp Gateway terminal.

As of October 2017, ACB Agencies and its partner Mariner Shipping will offer several departures per week to and from the Maltese market. The 45-foot containers used will make it possible to load the same volume as a standard trailer: 33 europallets or 26 block pallets. With a door-to-door time of around 10 days this service approaches the same transit time as a truck.

Northern Europe

The port of Antwerp has ambitions to improve connectivity in the northern Europe region, where two new services are being introduced.

Seago Line is putting on a feeder/shortsea service (L18) with the rotation Antwerp, Felixstowe, Kotka and Sillamäe using two units of 1,856 TEU.

Hapag Lloyd has also introduced a new service with two units of 2,400 TEU calling weekly at Antwerp, Rotterdam, Gdynia, St Petersburg, Helsinki, Gdynia and Antwerp.
