There are a few reasons why Port of Antwerp is Europe’s main steel port. In such a tough market, being able to offer a central location with reliable connectivity and state-of-the-art infrastructure is one. But there’s more to the story. It’s really about forging partnerships with our stakeholders. Together, we’re taking the next steps to redefine steel logistics, to our mutual advantage. Discover the three ways we’re doing so – it’s why we can truly say we have a soft spot for steel.
Want to know where your cargo is? Data-sharing platform Bulkchain will tell you. ArcelorMittal Logistics CEO William Moyersoen helped co-create it and shares his insights.
Zimmer Staal found a partner in Euroports to custom-build their warehouse, including a value-added zone for shotblasting, painting and cutting steel plates. Discover their story.
There’s no one-size-fits-all solution for shipping steel. Thankfully, at Port of Antwerp, ArcelorMittal COO Frank De Fyn is spoilt for choice. See what’s in his ‘magical mix’ ...
Data sharing will benefit the entire community
The greatest challenge in the steel industry today? According to ArcelorMittal CEO William Moyersoen, it comes down to a lack of transparency across the supply chain.
Thanks to Bulkchain – a new data sharing platform created by NxtPort together with Port of Antwerp and other stakeholders – that’s all about to change.
“Breakbulk logistics will always remain difficult, since you’re dealing with a great deal of complexity, customisation and risks. However, the Bulkchain platform offers a solution when it comes to matching our processes to our shipments. Data sharing will improve lead times, which in turn will lead to more accurate planning. And this will benefit the entire community.”
Creating added value is vital for our survival
The steel sector as a whole is becoming more service oriented, and, according to Zimmer Staal CEO Luc Cools, “clients are becoming increasingly demanding”.
So, Zimmer Staal set out to custom-build a warehouse that’s up to the challenge. At Port of Antwerp, they partnered up with Euroports to bring their vision to life. In the ‘added value corner’, Zimmer Staal now offers shotblasting, cutting and painting steel plates – next to traditional storage. But that’s not the only reason they’re based in Antwerp …
You need a ‘magical mix’ of transportation options to ship steel
When it comes to shipping steel, having options is important. And that's perhaps one of Port of Antwerp’s greatest advantages: every steel terminal has trimodal access to rail, road or barge transport options.
Frank De Fyn, COO at ArcelorMittal Logistics, agrees. “The steel trade business is pretty tough. There are a lot of different stakeholders we need to answer to. And we’re being challenged in new markets, which means even the traditional flows are no longer fixed. We have to keep up. There are different ways to be flexible. It really depends on the client and the type of product.”
